WestCumbriaSkeptic has recently(ish) returned from a trip to Frankfurt book fair. The road trip across Germany was punctuated by visits to some beautiful towns often including a look round the fabulous churches. The architecture of these old building is outstanding but the artwork leaves me cold.
If not feeling slightly sick. This stuff is just torture porn.
Is that all Jesus did? Is that the only bit that they are interested in? So when I rounded a corner and found this scene I was relieved. Finally, a picture not about Jesus dying or being dead.
Wait. What the…?! It turns out to be Saint Erasmus having his intestines wound round a stick.
Yep. Hideous death cult.
Interesting side note…
In this historic square in Frankfurt…
The plaque remembers the time and place in 1933 when National Socialist students (Nazis) burned books of science and philosophy. There are probably people who were there that are still alive now. Scary.
The text around the outside is a quote by Heinrich Heine from his play ‘Almansor’.
Das war ein Vorspiel nur, dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.
That was but a prelude; where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people also.
The centre writing reads
An dieser Stelle verbrannten am 10. Mai 1933 nationalsozialistische Studenten die Bücher von Schriftstellern, Wissenschaftlern, Publizisten und Philosophen
At this point 10 May 1933, the National Socialist student burnt books by writers, scholars, journalists and philosophers
